Panchayat

A Panchayat is a body of elected representatives of the people to administer the affairs of the Panchayat Raj institutions. In the case of a Gram Panchayat, it is the main body that implements the decisions of the Gram Sabha and carries out the day-to-day administration. The main components of a Panchayat are: President: He is the head of the Panchayat. He presides over the meetings and supervises the overall activities of the Panchayat. Vice President: He assumes the responsibilities in the absence of the President. Ward Members: Representatives elected from each ward of the Panchayat. Standing Committees: These are sub-committees formed to facilitate decision-making, such as finance, development, welfare, health, education, etc.

History of Grama Panchayat

Madappally Panchayat is a village panchayat with a rich socio-cultural heritage. Madappally, a village donated by the Thekkumkur king to the Edappally Swaroop, is known as the “village of hills”. Hindus and Christians are the major population groups. Several temples, churches and Jama Masjids are located here. The Shivaratri festival and Palliperunnal are the main celebrations. The library movement is active and several libraries and educational institutions are functioning in the panchayat. Major roads including the Changanassery-Vazhoor road pass through the panchayat. Rubber-based small-scale industries and grain processing units are the main economic activities.
